Gamification
Gamification methodology
The Playful City project was born from the meeting with Adamantia Batistatou, game-designer, graduated in master of ludology.
Interested in both games and the practice of physical activities, A.Batistatou was looking for a way to develop this game, not on screens, but in real life. Looking for a laboratory that could engage in such a project, she contacted Professor Y.Delevoye from Scalab, whose work on physical activity interested her. Following the Sport Plaisir project described above, and drawn on her side to study the motivation factor in sports practice, Pr.Delevoye accepted the cooperation. The theoretical starting point of Playful City is therefore the development of the concept of Sport Pleasure in the city. The idea is to create surprising, interactive sensory environments to motivate citizens to try and discover exercise tolerance, and thus feel the pleasure of being active on a daily basis. The key to pleasure in achieving physical effort would be the transformation of urban design. There are already projects gamifying the city. However, the effect they can have on citizens has never been measured. The contribution of Playful City is also the scientific methodology that will be associated with it, to quantify what the elements implemented in the city will bring; and to establish a guide for the implementation of these elements according to the different urban areas.
After completing an internship at Scalab, A. Batistatou began a thesis in 2018 devoted to Playful City. As a project having the city as its testing ground could not be carried out without its support, A.Batistatou contacted the MEL, which agreed to finance the thesis.
